The Story behind this Painting
Now I lay me down to rest
Sinking heavily into my watery bedOh lady Lake of sadness
Welcoming me into the soft gloom of your heavy embraceDrowning under strangled emotions
Swallowing every cold hard word and glancing pebbleI took all these things into my heart
Locking them away to protect you from their stingI’ve tried to hold them all
No complaint or questionBut one by one they have weighed me down
And I find I can no longer bear their weightThere was a time I would have drowned for you
But what use are my sightless eyes, my cold hands? What use is my stiff body to you?
With every breath I have fought this
All but one has escaped my lips
Would you demand that too?Should I be chained to you forever?
Must I drown?
My heart a stone dragging me downLet me go my love
I wish to soar
Not sink
